BEIS has announced the extension of the non-domestic RHI by six months.
Following extensive campaigning by leading trade association REA (Renewable Energy Association), the UK government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has announced that they will be extending the non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) by six months, due to the Covid-19 situation causing delays to the development and commissioning of a number of biomethane projects.
This is great news for the biomethane industry, both in terms of allowing new projects to be completed, but also in terms of all of the other numerous benefits associated with biogas-based energy. These benefits include: supporting agricultural jobs, diversification and income; reducing the UK’s dependence on fossil fuels; producing high quality digestate that reduces the use of chemical fertilisers; using ‘waste’ feedstock to produce renewable base-load energy; and decarbonising ‘tricky’ sectors of the economy such as domestic heating and transport.
The non-domestic RHI was originally planned to close in March 2021, but this six-month extension effectively provides a bridge to the RHI’s proposed replacement, the Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS), which is scheduled to start in autumn 2021.
