What’s the best way to deal with non-recyclable domestic waste?
A recent report by influential think-tank Policy Connect, made up of a group of cross-party Westminster MPs, has concluded that energy-from-waste (EfW) is the “safest and cheapest” solution to deal with the UK’s non-recyclable residential waste.
In combination with improved recycling rates, which have stagnated in the UK at around 45% in recent years, the report states that EfW is better for the economy and the environment than carbon-intensive landfilling here in the UK, or shipping waste overseas for incineration and energy recovery.
The Policy Connect report, entitled “No Time to Waste – Resources, Recovery & the Road to Net-Zero” also adds that increased focus on the improved utilisation of the heat generated by EfW sites, via District Heat Networks, as well as the development of suitable carbon capture and storage (CCS) capabilities at these facilities, should be supported by the UK Government.
CPL Activated Carbons plays a key role in the mitigation of the environmental impact of EfW facilities, both here in the UK and overseas. Our range of Filtracarb® FGT® powdered activated carbons are used by a large number of EfW facilities, where they are used for the abatement of persistent organic pollutants, such as dioxins and furans, as well as heavy metals including mercury.
